icon - time to call it quits?

Alright, at the risk of being told I’m bitching here, I honestly think that it’s time to admit defeat on zone icon, and cut the rest of the competition without there being a winner. This has nothing to do with any one person, this has to do with the fact that, in my opinion, having a talent contest on a site this small, and with members who are all so close to one another, just isn’t workable.

We’ve had withdrawals, disqualifications, diismissals of judges, technical problems, alagations of vote rigging, and all that with just 25 contestants. A user was voted off last week who I actually think deserved to be voted off. But because she’s apopular member of the site, people are saying it must have been a computer glitch or something. And as a result another user has withdrawn. Come on, it’s time for the farse to end. Even if loui won, and let’s face it loui will win, can we be sure that it will all be because of talent and that no-one will vote purely because she’s popular? I think not. And the reason I think not is because a lot of people have become so disillusioned with icon that they’re not going to listen or vote any more, so the only ones left voting will be the friends of the contestants.

I think that the idea of zone icon was an absolutely fantastic one. I think that having a talent show over the internet was a truly good idea, but having looked around the net, I can find no other such talent contests. And I think that the reason why has become abundantly clear over the past few weeks, a talent contest on a site that is so close nit is just not practical and would never have a fair outcome.

This is not a criticism of anyone, I think that the audio team did great, but I do really think now that it’s time to admit defeat, because to be brutally honest, I don’t see how anyone could back what is left financially now.

Just give it up and put it down to experience.

Now shoot me.

I agree with you. However, technicly they'd have to play it out, the winner does deserve the promised prize I guess but I have no interest in listening now.
I thought it was a great idea when I heard about it, it started out wonderfully but yes, this is the zone, a close knit community and that's going to happen I suppose.

Claire, I do agree with you for the most part. I think you put that well.
but if they were going to do icon next year, I'm sure these mistakes will be learnt from. Though as you say, this community seems a tad small for a smoothly-run contestt which will remain "fair", I think that surely icon could run next year, and, as I say, a lot will be learnt for then. It is the first one, afterall.

Post 4 by sugarbaby (The voice of reason) on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2006 6:17:54

rd I think you're right to an extent, but I think that there have been so many things go wrong with icon, that it just won't get the kind of enthusiasm next time, unless we have a whole new group of members by then. I do think that lessons could be learned, as per my other board topic, I'm just not sure whether it can be done again without the contravercy that's surrounded it this time. Plus I'm not sure how easy it would be to get sponsorship for something that's had such bad publicity.

Post 5 by The Luggage (Zone BBS Addict) on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2006 6:50:08

Sorry, but this board is pointless and serves absolutely no purpose Claire!

I withdrew to make a point! That is, group voting should not be tollerated under any circumstances! A competition can work in a community like this one, if people keep their mouthes shut and vote for who they truly believe is tallented! The competition stands no chance what so ever if people are going to go around and persuade other people to vote for someone they may not have voted for otherwise!

But this isn’t just about what happened with you mat. What happened with your votes is just one in a long line of things. Firstly there was no proper communication to contestants and puggle felt she had to withdraw as the commitment was too much, but she hadn’t been informed of what commitment was expected in the first place otherwise she might not have entered at all. Then there was the disqualification of a contestant which was well deserved as he clearly broke the rules, but by now the users weren’t able to vote from 10 because we didn’t have a top 10 we had a top 8. Then there was the farse surrounding aaron’s dismissal, which again was played out on the boards, and then there was your withdrawal from the contest following an apparent group voting scam.

My point is more that this site is too small to host a contest like this one without it erupting into contravercy, because everyone knows everyone else, so when things go wrong, they do so in a spectacular way and everyone piles in because whatever happens becomes public knowledge.

If a contest like this were to ever be hosted again, I would suggest external judges, and far less info be made available to all – i.e. voting stats needn’t be made available to staff until results are final, and stats needn’t be made available to the public at all.

Did you expect this contest to go without controversy?
While it's a little surprising how things have gone, let's keep in mind that this is the first year.
If you personally don't want to have anything to do with icon then stay away from it including this bord.
And as for closing the contests, at would be even more unfair to the contestants and sponsers then Aarons dismissle.
It's gone to far to turn back now and if the contestants and staff are willing to ride out the storm then let them.
I hope they do this again next year with some improvements, but with vary little or no overall change.

Despite all that crap being put on the boards, I think icon has gone alright! It's the real world. There is going to be some problems with it. ! What would the show be without it? I also dont think it's fair of you to say people are talking about the jess thing because she is popular! Give the girl a freaking break. First she was going to win because it was rigged and she was popular. Now she got voted off by her so called popularity group and there bitching about it for that reason. Makes no sence to me! If Matt didn't think it was pulled in his favor, I know Matt, and he wouldn't have came forward with this, if he didn't know it was true! Matt, I think that is so awesome of you to be so honest! Jess was voted off and people are going to talk about it, as they have everyone else that was voted off, not because of her popularity or lack there of! Jess you an awesome singer! Job well done! I don't know What the financial thing you are talking about is/ The show still seems to have a lot of followers even through all this, people say they are done with it, and still seem to toon in every weak. Just can't get away from the icon fever. hehehe Smiles! I'm sure it's the way Mark says Zone Icon, or maybe it's to hear Ather's however, or Liz's congratulations or good job! hehehe Oh wit there past that now. hehehe Smiles.

Well, this might be the last board I post to for now until I feel better, but let me say a few things. I think there will be another show next year if people want there to be, and if we have new judges. Voting should be based on talent and not popularity. sure some people's friends are going to vote for them, but I've seen friends vote for other people to, so I dunno what to say about all that. I told Matt that he was very brave to withdrawl even though I wanted him to sing more and I din't hear the show last night anyway because I felt like shit from all the anastesia. But anyway, the people who are left should finish it out, I don't know how the voting will be though. It'll be interesting who wins I guess and to see wha thappens. I do agree that this is a small community because on American Idol they've got millions of people calling in and voting and we're a small site of a few thousand or whoever comes on here at least. But I dunno, I'm disapointed with the show in general, and hope they'll be a better one next year, and I'm a little tired of the complaining, but everyone's got something to say, and weather it's complaining or not, just let them say their peace. I guess that's all I have to say for now, so just take care everyone.
Jasmin

Shana, I totally agree with you. I know that I have made comments about this stuff in the past, but thinking about it now, I know that there are people out there, namely the ZI team, who have put their asses in to making this happen. There are people sponsoring it. Did they have too? no! There are people still listening. I genuinely don't mind saying that I did indeed vote for Matt last week. Not coz I was asked to, told to, or pressured in to it. I did it because, although I amy not have felt he was the best performance, I certainly didn't think that he was the worst by any means. Who says you have to vot for the same person every week anyway? Isn't that just proving the sinical view that it's a popularity contest? I think, no matter how hard Jay and Chris try with this site, no matter how hard the icon team have worked and hopefully will continue to do so in the future, there will still be people on this uver-sensitive all-dramatic community who won't be happy. There will always be people in life who aren't happy! You can't please everyone! So, what would you all like, a pole to vote on whether zone icon should be repeated in the future? Or will you all think that that's been rigged too! Well done to all who entered... That took guts. Guts that I didnt' have this time, but maybe, if there is a next time, I might. Good work all of you.

your all idiots, plain and simple. There are going to be mistakes, and there's no-1 persuading anyone to do anything, your all just stupid. People aren't perfect, and the icon contest isn't either, but, it's it's first time, give it a chance!

Danielle,

I like the idea of having a poll concerning icon's continuation, and would vote in the affirmative if such a poll existed.

Post 13 by Lieutenant Commander La Forge (01) on Thursday, 07-Dec-2006 15:09:15

hey there gang. Just finished reading this bord, and I have a thought. I keep saying that icon is a wonderful thing. I have enjoyed listening to the contestants sing, and also I love the spirit in whitch they have come into the icon recordings. But I think as time went on with icon, some people went on power trips and just had a tizzy. It is my belief that if we have icon next time, the staff needs a major re-work. I think that some of the staff has allowed the authority to get to there head, and as such, should not be a part of Icon next season. if at all possible, some outside people who have nothing to do with the zone might be brought in. I think there needs to be a balance of those who do have something to do with the zone, and those who don't. All Icon staff are zoners, and are friends of zoners. I hate to say it, but icon may have been the reason for loss of some friendships. Friends and business should not be put together and this is a prime example as to why this should not happen. The Icon audio team have good job in the production work of the show, however, I think that even the audio team should be re-worked next season if there is one. I think I speak for a lot of zoners when I say, icon has left a sour taste in our mouves. But we are at the home stretch and will it be Loui? or Danielle? I think it will be Loui personally, but we shall see.

Post 14 by Liz (The Original) on Thursday, 07-Dec-2006 15:13:44

I don't know why a poll of the sort mentioned above couldn't be implemented. I for one think it a good idea, and that it would benefit everyone involved. I definitely agree that there we some things regarding Icon that should have been done differently, and things that were done that worked, but it was the first year of the competition, and we're all bound to learn a thing or two.
Just my two sense, for what it's worth...

Post 15 by Puggle (I love my life!) on Thursday, 07-Dec-2006 15:53:13

good luck loui, good luck danielle, have fun, win lose, it won't make much difference to your life either way, we still love ya and knowyou both can sing great and your both awesome girls. icon team good work, spectacular mess ups that none of your for saw. I hope that this show hasn't damaged friendships so terribley because that would mean icon was a flop. I think it's great, and if it is run the same way next year as it was this year, then I will fit it into my calander and compeat for all it's worth.

Post 16 by ISeeZip (Veteran Zoner) on Thursday, 07-Dec-2006 16:12:05

I think it would make lots of sense to do this contest earlier in the year next time around.

Post 17 by fuzzy101 (The master of fuzz!!) on Thursday, 07-Dec-2006 18:22:54

Personally, I think the only people who should have a say is the contestants.
They've worked hard to get this far so I think they should have a major say so.
If it came down to a pole though I would vote no, it's come this far and I think it should inish.

Post 18 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Friday, 08-Dec-2006 1:39:21

yaaay, Danielle, I thik people are finally coming around. hehehe smiles. I think chalk this up as a bug getter outer! hehehehhahaha!

Post 19 by Jesse (Hmm!) on Friday, 08-Dec-2006 7:35:01

Duh! Of course it needs to play out! The contestants haven't worked this hard just for the plug to be pulled! It's kinda a pointless question, don't you think?

Post 20 by JH_Radio (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 08-Dec-2006 10:20:18

Okay I know a few people from the zone Icon. Actually Katie (Harriet Potter), is my girlfriend and I didn't vote for her once. I find it quite easy to withdraw myself from that level and relationship for a vote, and really look at all the contestants from an outside perspective. Speaking for myself I don't know any of the other contestants, in fact rarely have I even spoken to them on Vintrillo. I truely went with who I thought was the best and to me, it was Loui every time. Sure the others had good points, but Loui made it all her own. I don't understand lyrics, and strictly go on the music part of this whole thing, the music and the sound of the voice. I know two of the judges and they are great people. However, I agree that this thing needs to be reworked completely and having more outsiders would probably not be a bad thing. It doesn't much matter to me if there is one next year or not. I'd listen and vote if there was one, and life would go on for me if there wasn't. I do agree with earlier postings that if there is perhaps the summer time, say starting it in June would be a better thing. This time of year is busy for everyone, and it just seems that with the holiday season in full swing, its just another thing to add on everyone's plates that already have more then they can handle. John

Post 21 by sugar (Entertain me. I dare you.) on Friday, 08-Dec-2006 11:06:22

I'm sorry, but how the hell do you propose getting in outsiders? Who would waste their time? And, so you seriously think that they, normal people that they will be, won't make friendships and perhaps even, dare I say it, be slightly bias come to a point? Also, to find these outsiders, they're not going to mysteriously appear from nowhere.... They're more than likely going to be known by one of us.... Get over it! If you don't like it, don't listen! Don't participate! It's not rocket science!

Post 22 by fuzzy101 (The master of fuzz!!) on Friday, 08-Dec-2006 13:14:14

We got an outsider as a judge.
Ranted she all ready knew the person who asked her, but she is still one as far as I'm concerned.
So if we can do it this year, there's no reason why it can't be done next year.

Post 23 by JH_Radio (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 08-Dec-2006 15:40:29

My thoughts exactly, Fuzzy. Anything is possible in life. There is no way to completely eliminate every possible samereo for this contest. There will be something that will come up every time that we didn't think of that will put a spin on the whole thing. John

Post 24 by Lieutenant Commander La Forge (01) on Friday, 08-Dec-2006 19:00:10

she is not an outsider. She knows one or two of the staff. I don't know the exact deal there, but she was heard saying that she knows one of them. so there you go. outside help? I am not sure how possible that is, and Danielle made a good point. Who would want to make the time to do something like this? Talk later fokes,

Post 25 by ctsoprano (Generic Zoner) on Friday, 08-Dec-2006 23:03:31

To be exact, I knew Kai long ago. I only knew Mark because he is dating Allie, who has been like my sister since I was younger. She had not asked me. It was Mark who had called me and asked me randomly. I had never really talked to Mark before this. I hadn't spoken to Kai since I was thirteen.

Post 26 by Jasmin (Account disabled) on Sunday, 10-Dec-2006 16:01:53

ok, ok, let's see. Maybe making the show earlier in the summer might be better, that is a good point. I guess it really depends on how old the top ten peopel are at least, because college doesn't get out until at least this year so far, the 5th of this month, and doesn't start til mid January, so yeah maybe they've got a lot on their shoulders, and might not want to do anything since they just got done with finals. High schoolers, I don't know, I don't even know if anyone from high school was in volved in the top ten, but what if there were? They wouldn't get out of school until later than college kids, so who knows. But yes, I think summer is a good thing. But it's really hard to say the right time though because people might have jobs or God knows what's going on in their personal life which we don't want to mess with you know? I don't know if I'm making any sense, but I could just be totally wrong, but that's what I think. I think the show should go on, it's down to the last one anyway, and it'll be fun to hear the judges sing to. But I think everyone has made good points about lessons to be learned about this show, and I hope they all take it into consideration if there will be a show next year. And if you don't want to listen, then don't for those that don't care anymore. No one is forcing you to, it's ok. Anyway, I've gotta take out my dog, so gotta cut this short. If I think of anything, I'll post later.
